TCU Football Honored For Its High Graduation Rate

From TCU Media Relations: For the fourth straight year, the TCU football program's high graduation rate has been recognized by the American Football Coaches Association.

TCU was cited by the AFCA for graduating at least 75 percent of its players who entered as freshmen in 2004. The AFCA utilizes the NCAA's Graduation Success Rate (GSR) formula.

All but one of TCU’s 19 seniors this season have already earned their degree or are on track to graduate by May.

The Horned Frogs, one of just three programs (Ohio State, Oregon) to play in a BCS game the last two seasons, have clinched a share of the Mountain West championship and can win the league outright for a third consecutive season with a victory Saturday over UNLV. TCU begins Big 12 play next fall.

A win Saturday would also give TCU its fourth straight 10-win season and eighth in the last 10 years. Prior to head coach Gary Patterson's arrival on campus in 1998, the Horned Frogs had just four 10-win seasons in their history.

TCU has won 36 of its last 39 games and is 48-5 in its last 53 contests. Since 2008, the Horned Frogs’ 45 wins (45-5) rank third nationally.

The GSR is based on a six-year graduation window for student-athletes and was developed by the NCAA as part of its academic reform initiative to more accurately assess the academic success of student-athletes. The GSR holds institutions accountable for transfer students, unlike the federal graduation rate. The GSR also accounts for mid-year enrollees.

Under GSR calculation, institutions are not penalized for outgoing transfer students who leave in good academic standing. These outgoing transfers are passed to the receiving institution's GSR cohort. By counting incoming transfer students and mid-year enrollees, the GSR increases the total number of student-athletes tracked for graduation by more than 37 percent.

TCU Senior Class Deserves Credit

This TCU senior class is special. Not that last year or previous classes weren’t special, but this group helped elevate TCU to a level that most Frog fans never dreamed of.

TCU’s 19 seniors have won 45 games, becoming the fourth straight class to set a TCU win record. Once they take care of UNLV on Saturday, this class will clinch their third consecutive outright Mountain West championship. Just look at what this group has been able to do…

- Won a Mountain West record 23 straight conference games. (Will be 24 soon)
- 3 Mountain West Conference titles
- 3 Straight wins versus top 5 teams
- 2 BCS games
- Rose Bowl Champions
- 22-1 at home
- 45-5 overall
- And a partridge in a pear tree…

Those are some impressive numbers.

To add onto the success on the field, all but one of the 19 seniors have already earned their degree or are on track to graduate by May. I don’t know if you could ask for much more.

TCU fans should be thankful for these seniors and everyone that can be at the game on Saturday should be there to show their appreciation.

Frogs in the League: Week 12

Here is a quick recap of what the former Frogs did in the NFL this week.

- Andy Dalton rallied the Bengals to a come from behind win over Cleveland 23-20. Dalton was 21-31 for 270 yards a 1 touchdown. Dalton also had 23 yards rushing. Is Dalton and Green “restoring the roar to Cincinnati?”

- The Detroit Lions have given Aaron Brown another shot after Jahvid Best was put on IR. The Lions previously had released Brown back in September.

- Drew Coleman had one pass breakup in the Jaguars 20-13 loss to Houston.

- David Hawthorne made 7 tackles for Seattle in their 23-17 loss to the Redskins.

- Jeremy Kerley and LaDainian Tomlinson were both out again for the Jets as New York beat Buffalo 28-24.

- Jerry Hughes had one of his best days as a pro with 3 tackles in the Colts 27-19 loss to the Panthers.

- Jason Phillips is still out for Carolina with a calf injury.

- Daryl Washington racked up 5 tackles and a pass deflection in the Cardinals 23-20 win over St. Louis.

TCU Slowly Moving Up in Rankings

The newest college football rankings are out and there wasn’t a lot of movement by the Frogs, but every little bit helps. Despite my prediction of Houston losing before the season is over, it looks like it won’t happen. The Cougars only have Southern Miss remaining in the Conference USA championship game and they will probably take care of business. There is still hope though.

TCU moved up to #18 in both the BCS standings and AP Poll. The Frogs also jumped up one spot to #17 in the USA Today Coaches Poll. TCU fans just need to root for a big win versus UNLV and hope Southern Miss can pull off the upset.

West Virginia Will do as They Want...

In case you actually thought West Virginia cared about the Big East and their exit penalty, here is further proof that the Mountaineers don’t care and will be in the Big 12 sooner rather than later…Deadspin.com posted this picture of the WVU basketball practice court with the Big 12 logo already in place.
