Mountain West Conference media days are in the books and the TCU Athletics Facebook page just posted a few pictures from the event. Here are a couple of shots of the new 2011 helmet and home jersey.

Mountain West Conference commissioner Craig Thompson held his “state of the conference” address on Wednesday night and spoke on a multitude of topics. A lot of it focused on the growing gap between the have and have-nots in college football, but one of his comments on expansion did catch my attention.
How close did the Mountain West get to adding Colorado, Kansas State or Iowa State?
“Colorado had gone (to the Pac-10) on Thursday (June 10, 2011), and we added Boise State on Friday morning (June 11).,” Thompson said. “Are Kansas State and Iowa State going to need a spot? That was very much alive that weekend.”
I don’t know what to take out of the “very much alive” statement. Was there discussions only? How serious were the discussions? Was there a plan in place to bring them aboard immediately? I would imagine a few of the non-BCS conferences were in touch with those schools during that time period.
Secondly, there wasn’t a mention of Kansas in that statement which makes me wonder where the Jayhawks were thinking of landing? I would imagine the Big East would have been their preference. Once the Big XII-2 fails (yes it will fail), I wonder if Kansas would be open to joining the Big East? Would the Big East be open to adding them? It would be a solid addition to an already strong basketball conference.
Does Boise State gain a competitive advantage by wearing all blue uniforms on their blue field? I have heard people bring the argument up before, but I am not sure if I buy it. Nonetheless, Mountain West Conference Commissioner Craig Thompson does buy it.
The Boise State football team will not be allowed to wear blue pants and blue jerseys at home in Mountain West Conference games.
The prohibition applies only to Boise State and was part of the school’s agreement to join the league.
“I thought it was ridiculous,” Petersen said of his reaction. “… That’s our colors. That’s who we are. That’s who our fans have wanted us to be since I’ve been at Boise State. That’s what it’s been through and through.”
Said commissioner Craig Thompson: “What we had heard from our coaches is ‘a competitive advantage.’ It’s as simple as that.”
Boise State should be glad the Mountain West didn’t make them change their field to green instead. It’s not the uniforms that bother me, it’s the hideous blue field. Someone should tell Boise State to change that embarrassment of a football field and they can go back to wearing all blue.
