NBA Finals Get Underway Tonight

The rematch of the 2006 NBA Finals gets underway in Miami tonight as the Mavs take on the Heat. There are a lot of interesting story lines around this series, but in the heart of Mavs fans, nothing matters besides getting that ring.

In the history of the NBA only 7 MVPs have failed to win a NBA title. Two of those players, LeBron James and Dirk Nowitzki are playing in this series. Also, Mavs PG Jason Kidd at age 38, will become the oldest starting guard in NBA Finals history. That is just a couple of things to keep your eyes on.

As I have posted before, I was completely wrong about the Mavs this season. Never in a million years would I have expected them to get back to this point the way they did. I have faith and have fully bought in. I think they can beat Miami, and here is how they do it.

Contain: The Heat’s trio of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh has combined to score 73.5 % of the Heat’s points this postseason. We know they are going to get their points. The Mavs have to stop them from having big games, and don’t allow their bench and roll players to get going.

Protect the paint: LeBron and Wade like to drive to the basket. We saw how Westbrook was able to get into the lane in the last series, the Mavs can’t allow that in the Finals. Tyson Chandler and Brendan Haywood must control the paint and stay out of foul trouble.

Knock down shots: The Mavs have been shooting well for the most part, but it still worries me that they don’t drive to the basket a whole lot. If shots aren’t falling, especially 3’s, Dallas could be in trouble.

With that said, I think the Mavs depth will be the difference in this series. Yes, Miami plays outstanding defense, but they also haven’t seen an offense like the Mavs this postseason. Payback from 2006 will be sweet, and I think the Mavs win it in 6.

TCU Football Ranks High in APR Score

This is a couple of days old but I forgot to post it, so here you go…

From TCU Media Relations: The TCU football program's Academic Progress Rate (APR) score of 972 ranks fourth among the top 25 in the final 2010 BCS standings.

The APR is a term-by-term measure of eligibility and retention for Division I student-athletes that was developed as an early indicator of eventual graduation rates.

The Horned Frogs took the field at the Rose Bowl with 17 players having already earned their degree. Earlier this month, an additional 10 players graduated.

All 13 seniors on the 2009 TCU football team graduated. In the 2008-09 academic year, 20 Horned Frog football players received their degree.

In each of the last three seasons, TCU has been cited by the American Football Coaches Association for its high graduation rate. During that time, the Horned Frogs have a combined 36-3 record.
