Scouts Give Their Take on TCU Players

The TCU players who worked out yesterday had a pretty good day. It wasn’t spectacular, but they all did what they had to do. Here is what the experts are saying.

On Dalton

Dalton was among a host of several highly productive collegiate stars who struggled to prove they have that rare combination of arm strength and accuracy necessary to duplicate their success in the NFL. Dalton, Virginia Tech's Tyrod Taylor and Iowa's Ricky Stanzi each must rely on the strength of their productive careers on the field after lackluster performances in Indianapolis.

You won’t find a more technically sound quarterback in the draft than Dalton. He has tremendous touch on shorter throws. Those who criticize him have to understand that he does not possess great arm strength. If you were expecting to see that during his throwing session, you were going to be disappointed. However, he showed surprisingly good touch on deeper downfield sideline throws, which really isn’t a facet of his game that he’s asked to work on much.

Again, you have to understand what Dalton is and what he isn’t. He’s not and never will be a power thrower although his arm is capable of getting stronger over time. What he is, at this point, is a guy who is a rhythm passer and he’s path to playing will be shorter than most because he’s so technically proficient. If you watch the Rose Bowl, you will know exactly what I mean.

On Kerley

The old adage of "playing speed" versus "timed speed" was on display when the receivers worked out. Edmund Gates of Abilene Christian ran a pair of swift 40s, clocking under 4.4. Meanwhile, Jeremy Kerley of TCU struggled to get under 4.6, while Vincent Brown of San Diego State was one-tenth of a second slower. Yet when it was time to catch the football, it was Kerley and Brown who looked as though they had the 4.4 speed
