2011 BCS Bowl Game Predictions

The BCS bowl games get underway on Saturday with the Rose Bowl and Fiesta Bowl taking center stage. I feel it is the appropriate time to get my predictions in.

Rose Bowl: TCU (-3) vs. Wisconsin (Prediction coming tomorrow)

Fiesta Bowl: Oklahoma (-17) vs. UConn- I don’t see Bob Stoops choking off another BCS bowl this year, especially against UConn. The Sooners win and cover.

Orange Bowl: Stanford (-3.5) vs. Virginia Tech- I think this is an interesting matchup and should be a good game. I feel Virginia Tech has finally got their act together and will pull off the upset against Stanford.

Sugar Bowl: Ohio State (-3.5) vs. Arkansas- The fraud bowl. There is still no reason for Pryor and the other suspended Buckeyes to even be playing in this game. I just hope Arkansas can pull off the upset. I say Ohio State wins but doesn’t cover.

BCS National Championship: Auburn vs. Oregon- The Auburn offense will be too much for the Oregon defense to handle. Plus, the Tigers have enough speed on defense to contain the Ducks offense. Auburn wins by at least 10 points.

TCU Offense vs. Wisconsin Defense: The Forgotten Matchup

The 97th Rose Bowl Game presented by Vizio is right around the corner now and both teams will start to put the finishing touches on their game plan. Most of the talk to this point has been about the size of Wisconsin and their offense versus the TCU defense. I would like to bring attention to a matchup that isn’t getting a lot of consideration. How will the Wisconsin defense matchup with the TCU offense?

People are failing to realize that the TCU offense is just as, if not more potent than the Wisconsin offense. The Frogs average the same amount of points per game (43.3), and rank higher in rushing and passing yards per game than the Badgers.

The Wisconsin defense is ranked 31st in the nation against the run giving up 131.7 yards per game. The TCU rushing attack is ranked 7th averaging 261.2 yards per game on the ground. That matchup clearly favors the Frogs.

The Badgers have only faced two teams this season ranked in the top 20 of rushing yards per game. Why is nobody talking about the high powered TCU offense that averages over 40 points per game going up against a Wisconsin defense that is giving up 20 points a game? If those roles were reversed, I guarantee you it would be getting more attention.

I think you will see the TCU offense move the ball effectively on the ground and through the air against the Badgers on Saturday.

Prudential Tower Lit Purple for TCU

From Stefan Stephenson on Twitter:

Keys to the Rose Bowl for TCU and Wisconsin

The Rose Bowl inches closer and Angry Trey’s coverage continues to push forward. I am expecting a close, tough fought game this Saturday between two very good teams. (Prediction coming later) I honestly think either team has the ability to win this game, it just depends on how everything plays out. Here are the keys to the game for TCU and Wisconsin if they want to leave Pasadena victorious.

Control the Clock: TCU got away from the run in last year’s Fiesta Bowl against Boise State. They don’t need a repeat performance in the Rose Bowl. The Frogs must have a balanced attack and control the clock. The Horned Frogs are 52-2 in its last 54 games when leading in time of possession. The Badgers offense is just as potent as TCU’s so the longer you can keep them off the field, the better.

Contain the Wisconsin Running Game: The Badgers are known for their big offensive line and stable of running backs. The last thing TCU needs is to have Wisconsin running the ball all game and having a worn out defense in the 4th quarter. The Frogs need to limit the Badgers yards per carry and get off the field on 3rd downs.

Force at Least One Turnover: TCU is 54-1 when ahead (38-1) or even (16-0) in turnover margin over the last six seasons. That is basically all you need to know. Protect the ball, cause turnovers and the Frogs will be sitting pretty.

Get a Double Digit Lead Early: This isn’t a must, and I don’t know how likely it is, but it could put Wisconsin in a tough position. As I said, the Badgers would prefer to pound the ball on the ground. If they get behind early, it could force them into more passing situations. Although Tolzien is an accurate QB, TCU should force the Badgers to rely on his arm to win the game.

Run the Ball: It’s simple. It is the Badgers bread and butter and their running game is what got them to this point. If Wisconsin can average in the 4-5 yards per carry range, they could possibly wear down the TCU defense and put the team in a good position to win the game.

Contain Jeremy Kerley: The Frogs will try to get the ball in Kerley’s hands early and often. Plus, as I have mentioned numerous times already, he is a pretty good kick returner as well. The Badgers need to limit his touches of the ball as much as possible.

Take Shots Down the Field: I think the biggest weakness for the TCU defense is defending the long ball. San Diego State exposed the Frogs in the second half of their game, and I think the Badgers should try a similar approach. If they open up the field early with a few deep throws, it could open up the run for later in the game.

Take Away TCU’s Short Passing Game: Although Dalton can have success throwing to deeper routes, he shines with quick passes, screens, slants, etc…If I was Wisconsin I might think about pressing the TCU WR’s at the line. If the Badgers corners are able to get a punch at the line of scrimmage, it could disrupt the TCU timing.
