Mavs Training Camp Day 1: Recap and Audio...Kevin McHale in the Building??

Mavs kicked off training camp from the campus of SMU this morning. We have a full recap and all the audio you need to hear.

- One of the biggest surprises to the media this morning was Kevin McHale in attendance. McHale and Coach Carlisle are good friends and he will be in town all week helping out the big men with their low post moves.

- Heavy defensive practice this morning. The team went through multiple defensive drills, and expect to hit the offense tonight in the second practice. There seems to be a much stronger emphasis on defense this season, at least from what we have heard and seen so far.

- Coach Carlisle is working Josh Howard in gradually. The team is airing on the side of caution, but the treatment is very aggressive.

Mavs Media Day Recap and Audio!!

The Mavs held their annual media day today as many NBA teams did before the tip off of training camp tomorrow. Coach Carlisle, Dirk, Jason Kidd, Jet, and Shawn Marion spoke with the media. You can hear all they had to say below.

I think one of the key points made, especially by the older, veteran players is that the team is fresh and rested. Dirk and Jason Kidd spoke about how they took some time off over the summer and their bodies are refreshed. These are two guys who normally play a lot of basketball in the offseason, but that was more limited this offseason, especially since there were no Olympics. I expect the team to have fresh legs and come out of the gate strong.

Another important point is having a healthy Josh Howard. The team recognizes what they can achieve with Josh on the floor, which was evident during the playoffs last season. Jason Kidd spoke in depth about getting Josh more involved and even calls him the teams X-Factor.

Shawn Marion is hilarious. Every person on the team describes him as a character and they are 100% accurate. He came sprinting into the interview room today talking about he was so fast we didn’t even see him!

Jason Terry had one of my favorite quotes when asked about the people sleeping on the Mavs. “If their asleep they are going to wake up quick.”

Mavs Sign Jake Voskuhl

The Dallas Mavericks announced today they have signed NBA veteran center Jake Voskuhl. Terms of the deals were not disclosed. Dallas enters its 30th training camp with a 17-player roster. For the second consecutive season, the Mavericks will hold training camp at Crum Basketball Center on the campus of Southern Methodist University.

“It’s hard to believe this marks the 30th year of Mavericks basketball,” President of Basketball Operations Donnie Nelson said. “This squad is as explosive and versatile as we’ve ever had. With seven new faces, we’ve added solid veteran depth at each position. We couldn’t be more excited and can’t wait to get started.”

Voskuhl (6-11, 255) joins the Mavericks after spending last season with Toronto where he averaged 1.6 rebounds and 6.3 minutes in 38 appearances. Dallas is the sixth stop for Voskuhl, a nine-year veteran, who has also played for Chicago, Phoenix, Charlotte and Milwaukee. After being drafted in the second round (33rd overall pick) of the 2000 NBA Draft, the former Connecticut Husky spent his rookie season in the Windy City before moving onto Phoenix the following season.

In 2003-04, his best season as a pro, Voskuhl averaged 6.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.2 blocks and 24.3 minutes through 66 games (43 starts) for the Suns. Voskuhl has made one appearance in the postseason (2002-03 with Phoenix) and holds averages of 6.0 points, 3.7 rebounds and 16.3 minutes per game in six outings. Voskuhl owns career marks of 4.0 points, 3.4 rebounds and 14.3 minutes through 450 games (93 starts).
